And Carmina Villarroel’s comeback on the big screen happens via “Sunod”. PaulSoriano’s Ten17P and Globe Studios first partnership comes together to create a chilling masterpiece that combines the thrill of technology and the mystery of tradition.
The MMFF2019 entry, which marks the feature directorial debut of Carlo Ledesma directs Carmina with Mylene Dizon, Susan Africa, Freddie Webb, Kate Alejandrino, Krystal Brimner, Rhed Bustamante and JC Santos.
Carmina is Olivia. A single mother who accepts a high-paying job in a call center to pah for her daughter’s hospital bills. Her work is in an old building. and while Olivia struggled to adjust to her new environment, she encounters spooky events-leading her to uncover the mystery behind the office walls.
Carmina and Susan shared some spooky experiences they experienced while in the shoot.
“Biglang namamatay ang mga ilaw. At an u holy hour naman na kasi. Sabi, baka that is their way of sending messages. Tumitigil naman kami,” shared Carmina.
Added Susan, “May nagsabi naman sa amin na magdala o maglagay ng luya (ginger) sa aming katawan o hawakan ito. For protection daw. Iba naman daw ‘yung sa bawang. Wala namang masama kung sumunod kami.
But more than the “katatakutan” it offers, Direk Carlo shares, “The film shows a modern-day profession amid an old structure so the result is a more interesting and atmospheric setting. “Sunod” is an exploration of the mental state that call center operators go through.”
Mel Mendoza-Del Rosario and Direk Nuel Crisostomo Naval made an adaptation of a Korean movie, “Miracle In cell No. 7.”
If “Sunod” centers on a mother-daughter relationship, “Miracle…” is that of a father’s love to his daughter.
The teaser which Viva Films started to share in different social media pages last November earned 3 million views in five hours. After two weeks, it ballooned into 18.4 million.
Aga Muhlach plays Joselito, a father to Yesha (Xia Vigor) who was put to jail for a crime he did not commit.
Through the help of his cellmates, Joselito gets to spend time with his daughter. And everyday, a miracle is given to the both of them.
Thanks to his “mga ka-kosa” in cell number 7- performed by equally good actors-Joel Torre, JC Santos, Soliman Cruz, Jojit Lorenzo and Mon Confiado. Also in the cast are John Arcilla, Tirso Cruz III and Bel Padilla.
In real life, the stars present in the press conference shared the different miracles they have encountered in life. Small ones. Big and memorable.
What caught our attention was Mon’s. About his daughter who is not his.
“I am talking about Ynez (Veneracion’s) daugher Kayla. Matagal na kaming wala ni Ynez. But inspite of that, nahing magkaibogan pa rin kami. When Kayla was born, naging malapit ako sa bata. I got to meet naman the Dad (Toto Mangudadatu).
“Nung kami pa ni Ynez, wala sa plano ko, namin na magka-anak talaga. Ayoko! Kaya nasabi ko ngayon na miracle sa akin ang inangkin kong anak ko, kasi ang dami’ng nabago sa akin ng bagets. Kapag wala si Ynez, like ngayon, may volleyball game sila ng friend niya sa kung saan, uuwi na ako to check on Kayla. Madalas magka-Face Time kami. Kaya alam ko ang nangyayari sa kanya. kaya relate na relate ako, kaming lahat sa istorya ng mag-ama portrayed by Aga and Xia sa movie.”
The little girl Xia says she’s very blessed to be chosen to portray the role of Aga’s Yesha.
