THE whole nation was overjoyed, because 24-year-old Filipino-Australian Catriona Gray is the new Miss Universe. The pageant held in Bangkok, Thailand on Monday morning, December 17th. Over 90 candidates from different countries competing for the crown.
Hundreds of thousands of people were gathered inside of the Impact Arena to witness this monumental event. Since the start of the event, fans started screaming every time they heard Catriona’s name. It’s not surprising, because she’s already a crowd favorite from the beginning.
Her final question is this: “What is the most important lesson you’ve learned and how will you apply it to your time as Miss Universe?”.
This is her winning answer: “I work a lot in the slums of Tondo, Manila and the life there is poor and very sad. And I’ve always taught to myself to look for the beauty of it and look in the beauty of the faces of the children and to be grateful.
“And I will bring this aspect as a Miss Universe to see situations with a silver lining and to assess where I could give something, where I could provide something as a spokesperson. And this I think if I can teach people to be grateful, we can have an amazing world where negativity could not grow and foster and children will have smile on their faces.”
Miss Venezuela Sthefany Gutiérrez was placed as second runner up while Miss South Africa Tamaryn Green landed as the first runner up.
Steve Harvey returned as the emcee of the evening once again while supermodel Ashley Graham, television personality Carson Kressley and runway coach Lu Sierra co-hosted the show.
Catriona Gray is the fourth Filipino to bring home the crown, joining Gloria Diaz, Margie Moran, and Pia Wurtzbach who won in 1969, 1973, and 2015, respectively.
