A big win for the Grammy-nominated singer Lea Salonga last Thursday, December 13, at the 31th Aliw Awards held at The Manila Hotel in Ermita, Manila.
She received not one, but two awards, including Entertainer of the Year Award and the Best Major Concert (Female) award for her 40th anniversary concert titled, “LS40.”
She mentioned in her speech that she won the award because of the great work from her team, “I mean I get to take it home, but it takes a village to create a concept like this. Celebrating 40 years is not a joke, because of what you include.
“However, I have a wonderful team. Of course, my musical director Gerald Salonga, director Bobby Garcia, our co-writer Victor Lirio, all of my guests: Mark Bautista, Esang [de Torres], Nicole [Chien]. Shining moment. [They gave time to] do this with me.” Said the Tony awardee.
She also thanked her mom, who produced the concert, for supporting her from the beginning. “My mom who was our producer of our concert. Thanks mom for always the wind beneath my wings. The angel in my corner. The one who will literally punch you if you say something bad about me. She’s always through out my career and also for Gerald’s, she’s been a super mom, super manager, cheering squad, She’s been pretty much our everything for what we have been to even for the past many kazillion years.” She said.
She will return on stage in a Broadway musical Once On This Island as the goddess of love, Ezrulie, on December 27th.
Just last week, she announced that she will star in a The 40th anniversary production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. It will run at The Theater at Solaire in October 2019.
